Having the choice and support to labor and birth in the privacy of the home is the right of every woman.
The choice of home birth is supported by a large and growing body of research showing intervention is much lower when birth is outside of the hospital, and with midwives. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence UK updated their guidelines last year (2014) promoting and encouraging birth with midwives, stating birthing at home or in a birth center was the safest place for low risk women to birth.
The rational for this is easy to understand when we look at the main hormones of birthing: oxytocin & endorphins. Incidentally love, trust, bonding and feel good hormones! In order for this hormonal cocktail to be continually released the laboring mother needs to feel safe, warm and have privacy and quiet with limited distractions. When this environment is available, the body easily gets on with birthing, instincts know exactly what to do, and most mums and babies need very little, to no intervention, during the process.
Midwives know not to mess with birth!
I advocate for a – women powered – women centered birth, minimal interventions, mummy or daddy ‘catches’, water birth, hands off approach, and evidenced based care practices. I have a huge belief and respect in the body’s ability for normal physiological enfoldment of the birth process.
Not all countries I serve support birth at home with midwives, contact me for more information.
